The Grand Transoceanic Match (GTM), patterned after the north versus south Grand Matches of Scotland, has developed into an opportunity for curling enthusiasts around the world to enjoy the curling facilities in the host city, to meet other curling enthusiasts, and to participate in a fun curling game. Originally the GTM was staged as Europe versus North America, and was called the Grand TransAtlantic Match. As the World Curling Championships expanded to include Asia, the GTM evolved into the Grand Transoceanic Match, and has used a number of different competition formats, always keeping in mind the principles of providing an opportunity for enthusiasts to have a fun curling game. Winnipeg is the home of a large number of curlers, with 119 sheets of ice in 20 different curling clubs. All of these clubs are anxious to show off their facilities to curlers from other places, so we are staging the GTM in 2003 as "Winnipeg versus the World". The draw will have a team of Winnipeg curlers against a team of curlers from elsewhere. (We may have to "borrow" curlers from nearby Manitoba communities if we are short of entries from Winnipeg, or we may have to "loan" Winnipeg curlers to the "elsewhere" teams if we have too many.) If you are interested in participating in this event, which includes transportation from the Winnipeg Arena to the curling clubs and return to the Winnipeg Arena, a GTM pin, a six-end curling game, and a lunch, please fill out the application form as soon as possible. We are limiting the event to 952 participants --- there were nearly 1100 participants the last time World Curling was held in Winnipeg in 1991.
